How and why to become a female ICOpro instructor?

To be a female ICOpro instructor ; a challenge and an experience !

It all started in the autumn of 2010, when I decided to try a canyoning excursion. When I arrived at our meeting point, there were quite a few participants; some experienced but also many first timers. In reality I didn’t actually know exactly what I was going to be doing, yet thinking that it was something to do with canoeing! When I saw one of the participants wearing a t-shirt with the writing: mountain+H20 – canoe= canyoning, I wondered what it meant!

By the time we had finished the activity, I was thrilled and full of excitement. That was it!! Within a week I had purchased all the equipment and signed up at a local training centre. I was very glad and relieved to see that I was not the only woman there! From then on, I have not stopped developing, improving, and getting to know new places. Quickly time went by and I made it to IN2 (Instructor Level 2) in ICOPRO.

ICOPRO created new horizons for me, gave me extensive knowledge and amazing opportunities, that only a few years ago I couldn’t even think about. Although at this point, I don’t know if I will pursue a more advanced level, I can feel the beginners’ pulse that never ceases to give me a renewed excitement. My greatest challenge and source of inspiration are children and young adults. I strongly believe it all starts with the new generation. I will make a great effort and do my best to attract children and younger adults, to teach and share with them this amazing experience. I think this is why I became IN2. To contribute, and play my part in the effort for a renewed structure and expansion in Greece.

[CENTER AFFILIATION] Rappel Maui Joins ICOpro

ICOpro is excited to announce that Rappel Maui has recently confirmed its affiliation to the organization, joining the growing list of ICOpro Affiliated Centers worldwide.

The second ICOpro Affiliated Center in the USA, Rappel Maui is based in the Hawaiian archipelago on its namesake island, Maui. Joining ICOpro as a Canyoneers Training Center (CTC), Rappel Maui will soon be offering both Canyoneer Initiation (CAI) and Canyoneer 1/2/3 (CA123) training courses to its clients.

Mike Barnett, ICOpro Instructor Level 1 and Manager of Rappel Maui, gives us some more insight on the affiliation process:

ICOpro: Could you give us an overview of Rappel Maui and its operations?
Mike Barnett: Rappel Maui started in 2007, as Maui Canyon Adventures. The owners hired world renowned canyoneer David Black, from Utah, to come write a canyon program, and help kick-start the business. Initially we were guiding several small beginner canyons in Maui. We lost access to those canyons due to local government not supporting canyoning. We restarted the business in 2012 when we gained access to a private site with 2 waterfalls and a ridge to rappel, in a 30 acre botanical garden. That’s when Rappel Maui was established as our DBA. We have a year round season. Our busiest times of the year is dependent on the North American school calendar. We typically sell out in summer and during the Christmas Holidays.

ICO: Why did you decide to affiliate Rappel Maui to ICOpro?
MB: Personally, I decided to join ICOpro because of their high industry standards, global network, and great instructor culture. My hope is to inspire our guides by progressing through the ICOpro levels and learning more about canyoning around the world. Canyoning in Maui has been somewhat isolated from the world canyoning scene, so we want to spread the word that we are here and offering awesome canyoning experiences and courses to all. I also hope to educate locals and guests on canyoning and improve the quality of their experience.

“My hope is to inspire our guides by progressing through the ICOpro levels and learning more about canyoning around the world.”

ICO: What are the canyons like in Hawaii? We’re curious…
MB: While we only currently offer tours in one canyon, we are always on the look out for more opportunities to guide more canyons. Maui currently has about 40 bolted canyons. These canyons are done by the local recreational canyoneers. Some of the best are Pandora, Excelsior, and Sunny D. You can expect nice & warm weather, good water flow and beautiful nature.

CANYON OF THE WEEK : Subra canyon, France

Subra canyon, technical pleasure

Subra canyon

Location: Vallee du Vicdessos, Ariege, Midi-Pyrenees, France

Rating: V3.A2.III

Type of rock: red schist

Best time of the year to visit: August to October

The approach itself is an enchantment. You go through many zigzags in the forest before you can find the last section; sometimes you get lost, it’s an adventure! In the middle of the forest, we recognize one tree… Yeah! It’s here! You take the lunch at the start of the canyon so you can enjoy the landscape, and then it’s time to descend!

Subra Canyon is more technical than its brothers in the area; it’s one of my favorite. You’re rappeling down every waterfall, you spend most of the time on a rope. It’s the perfect moment to expand your rope skills. Amongst red schist stones, vegetation explodes. You could think you’re in the middle of the cambodian jungle but no, you’re in Ariège!

Between two cliffs, you can chill and watch the landscape, but not too much though. To fully enjoy Subra, everybody must be active. We move the ropes forward, we help the last one; it’s a real team job… “Team work is the dream work,” as they say. The descent itself is not difficult but it demands stamina. You go through the canyon till the “Syringe Waterfall,” a strong experience.

Of course, like most things, the best comes at the end with “the Cave,” a high waterfall that I can only recommend to see by yourself. At the end of a day in Subra canyon, you feel like you have completed a challenge. You take look behind, feeling satisfied and complete, and it’s just the perfect moment to share a beer or strawberry soda with your team.

Subra has it all for a beautiful day in a canyon: A good dose of technicality, a spoon of beautiful landscapes, a pinch of self override… You are in charge of bringing the final ingredient: the good team!
